True. There are definitely benefits to being personable. I think the author said that she was being that. What she took issue with is having to become "buddies" with everyone to move up the corporate ladder. A good example is the movie, The Devil Wears Prada. The CEO was a person of non color that rose to the top in spite of being a woman and not being personable. Yes, it is a fictional account, but it rings true for those who have experienced this situation.
