I have seen similar statistics on the numbers of birds that may be killed by cats. Cats are natural hunters, similar to their larger cousins. That's why they're used on farms ( sometimes called barn cats) to keep the rodent population in control. This is instinctual, they're not deliberately trying to decimate the bird population. They are hard on lizards too, sorry. Glad to know you like us. :)
