Agreed. The covert narcissist will do almost anything to hide who they truly are. One thing that I will differ with you on though is most times they do not fool their friends and family members into going along with them. These individuals are the enablers, the co- dependents, and they know exactly what and who they are dealing with. They have a myriad of reasons for helping the narc stay in power. They become the "flying monkeys," protecting their queen or king at all costs. You are also correct in stating that a person is not stupid for falling for, or into this kind of relationship. You probably are just too darned empathetic, and everyone knows that narcissists love to take down those sweet little empathic beings!
